An interactive virtual workshop designed to provide Southeast Alaskan residents, Sealaska Shareholders, and Tlingit & Haida tribal citizens with the tools needed to launch a successful business that benefits our local community, environment, and the economy.

What is the cost?

This cost of these workshops range from $20 - 25.00. The fee will be collected after your attendance is confirmed, and will be payable via Paypal or by check. Any applicant that finds the fee to be a financial burden may request a waiver by emailing grow@spruceroot.org.

why should I apply?

To kick-start your business! Participants will emerge from the workshop with an outline for a business plan, the tools and templates to conduct financial projections, an understanding of how to apply for a business license and pay taxes, resources for funding their business, and a network of experienced mentors, community partners, and Alaskan entrepreneurs.


What is the time commitment for the workshop?

These workshops will take place from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM via Zoom (hours may vary). There will be additional self-paced workshop activities to complete outside these hours.


Will session recordings be available for those who are interested but don’t have the time to participate?

We may make some recordings available after the session. This workshop takes place several times a year, so if you are unable to attend at this time, keep an eye out for future iterations by following us on Facebook or signing up for email updates! The templates and planning tools are also available by working one-on-one with Spruce Root’s business coaches.


We welcome participants who are early stage entrepreneurs and those thinking about starting a business based in Southeast Alaska. These workshops are also open to Sealaska Shareholders and Tlingit & Haida tribal citizens living outside Southeast Alaska. We especially encourage applications from entrepreneurs who are Indigenous, Black, people of color, and/or those who are located in rural Alaska (outside of Juneau, Ketchikan or Sitka). Participants must be committed to being fully present during the Business Basics sessions.

Who should apply?


Are well-established businesses eligible to participate?

This is a starting point for new businesses or those with an idea. We encourage more established businesses to apply to our Path to Prosperity Business Competition (applications for the next round open April 1, 2023), Master Class (Fall 2022), or to work one-on-one with our business coaches.


Yes! This workshop is geared towards those who want to launch their business.

My business isn’t a business, it’s just an idea. Am I still eligible?


Are nonprofits eligible?

 No, only for-profit businesses are eligible to participate in the Business Basics workshop.
